Ok, of course we want you to think. Here are a few suggestions for things we’d like you to think: ‘I can’t wait for giftbug to go live!’, ‘Wow, these guys are brilliant’, ‘I HAVE to tell all of my friends to sign up for giftbug’ …just a few suggestions.
So then what do we mean by the title ‘We’re Thinking So You Don’t Have To’? Well, we’re committed to one of the foundations of great web design, and that is great usability. I read a book early in my career by Steve Krug, and it’s so worn out now, that it’s held together by a rubber band. The name of the book is Don’t Make Me Think. In addition to amazing content, I love the way Steve writes and it’s a really fun read. His number one principle of usability, if you get nothing else out of his book he stresses that you remember this, ‘Don’t make them think!’ Our goal is to keep things obvious, we want our users to easily find their way around giftbug. We never want people to have to guess or hunt or worst of all, leave the site frustrated. This is not always easy. A lot of work and thought goes into simple. Much conversation was had yesterday regarding our menu system, what to call items, how to order all of the menu items, menu placement and usability on mobile devices.
Like many of you, my folks are still fairly new to computers, although they’ve come a long way from the rotary dial telephone that they had until the phone company took it away from them and forced them to get one of those newfangled push button models. I’ve been warning my Mom that she’s going to be one of our first usability testers and we’re going to sit her in front of a computer and have her navigate through the website while we hover over her shoulder and watch every click and keystroke. So no worries future users, Momma Hetrick’s on the job! Maybe I’ll get her a t-shirt to say thanks.
We’re thinking so you don’t have to, this frees up time for you to think about all the people that you want to tell about giftbug!
